{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Y'all got any big smallmouth pictures?

Thanks! Need to get out and catch some new ones this year.
I agree about the pics. Tough fish to get a decent photo of and lipping them feels like putting them in some kind of MMA maneuver...

Nick - love the clawdad. Have caught a ton of big smallies on that fly. I also like that second shot of yours... I take all my smallmouth pics these days with my fingers not in their mouths. Don't get me wrong - I'll still lip em. But I think they look better with their mouths in their natural position. Meaner, somehow. More badass.

Just got back from my annual trip to quebec for smallmouth (and pike and walleye, but mostly smallmouth).  First time I went that I only used the fly rod.  Here's a sampling:

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Toronto in August

Lake Ontario is a great fishery. Never fished Toronto, but I grew up directly across the lake in Olcott, NY. Northern Pike, largemouth, smallmouth (might call em black bass up there), Muskie (scattered about), perch, sheephead, rainbows, browns, salmon all available. Trouts and salmons obviously aren't fly fishable this time of year on the lake, but there is great warm (if you want to call it that) water fishing available. Lake temp was right around 62 degrees when I was back last weekend. The hard winter and recent storms are slowing the lake from warming up.

Find a harbor and throw some line. IMO fishing culture is generally stronger up there (a higher percentage of folks fish) and you won't have a hard time finding an open area to cast, or get chased out of too many places.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Fly rod combo

I'm not a big 3-wt fan.  I have a few but I don't use them much,  they are fun for 3 reasons.

1) they bend more when you get a fish on, giving you more feeling, making a small bluegill feel like a big bass.
2) On spring creeks or other water where the fish are really skittish, you can get a more delicate presentation.  You can also do this with a long leader.  It's easier to turn over a 15 ft leader with a 5wt.
3) You can brag, "I caught a 20 inch rainbow on a 3wt"

A 3wt is a specialty rod, usually only for dry fly fishing  with occasion use of tiny streamers and sight fishing nymphs.  A 5wt is a general purpose rod.  Though I have preferences for even numbered rods.  I usually fish a 4,6, or 8wt.

I learned how to lean into fish years ago fishing bait for carp on spinning tackle.  Beth and I caught some massive fish doing that, and in Missouri I once accidentally snagged a small paddlefish (30-40 pounds) and landed it on the same tackle.

You should try light fly tackle and if you enjoy it, go for it --

The biggest difference I see is casting distance. On small streams, shouldn't matter. If you fish bigger water, you might find it really difficult to make some shots - particularly if it's windy, like Gene mentioned.

I think the main advantage (to me) is that most typical 3-weight rod/reel set ups are lighter than the usual 5-weights and a bit more pleasant to use when the conditions are right for it.  You can get a bit more delicacy with a lighter fly line touching the water, but this relies on your casting skill to a large degree.

The disadvantage is that if you use it on a windy day, onlookers will think you have never gone fly fishing in your life.

I have found no difference in the time taken to fight a fish with a 3-weight vs. a 5 or 6-weight, even larger fish...though you'll listen to legions of idiots who don't know how to fight fish using the rod butt tell you about "killing fish" (usually trout) with light rods.

I have my 10 year old nephew staying with me for the next week and I'd like to get him out for his first fish on a fly. He's recently taken the Orvis 101 class, and can get a basic cast out.  Any ideas of where we can go and have a good chance of getting him a fish.  We're not picky and would be happy with bluegill and sunfish.  I'm in Woodbridge but don't have a problem traveling throughout NOVA or even down to Fredericksburg.  With the rains having most streams running high and muddy our options are limited.  Thanks for any advise.  Bob

Also check out the Belize River Lodge.  It was on an episode of Seasons on the Fly recently.

I have never done this type of fly fishing, as I stick to trout along the east coast streams and rivers but I can't travel to Belize and not try to at least get a permit or bonefish. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Emily and I took a trip on the James with Matt Miles last Sunday.  Water was a little low but Matt worked hard and put us on some great fish.  I'd highly recommend a trip with him if you have the opportunity.

What about tackle?  I've been favoring an old Fenwick ff857 with a short-head, 8-weight line which makes shooting 40-50' casts in front of the boat extremely easy.  Plus, when you miss a good fish, you can slap the water with the fly rod like an angry idiot (to really impress your wife) without as much fear of breakage ;).

Check out El Pescador Lodge.  Some friends of ours went to Belize back in December on their honeymoon.  They did not stay at the lodge but they did do a fishing trip through there.  It's also the lodge where the fishing series Buccaneers and Bones was filmed.  The prices are not outrageous though.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Toronto in August

Last year, I decided to detour to the Credit River on my way up to Northern Ontario. It is a beautiful stream that runs cold all summer. If you search for Ontario Fly Fishing Maps there are great Google Maps based guides to the Grand and Credit. I have added them to my email hopefully they work. I'm going to head to the Grand in early August this year and then up to Algonquin park for larger Brook Trout.

Also, any recommendations in general on non-fishing things to do, places to eat, etc... So far we plan to see a blue jays game, the CN tower, and take a train to Niagara Falls.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Makeshift strike indicators

That ain't chocolate!

Reach down into your shoe, grab the packet that says "do not eat!" and crush it up and dust your grass with it -- that would work even better!  I prefer frog's fanny, but we're talking "pinch"!

I'm actually thinking that at least in the canal, it will be my go-to indicator. It makes absolutely no splash when it lands, so reduces the chance of spooking the carp. It also isn't big enough to catch enough air resistance to mess with your cast. The only draw back is it doesn't float, so if it breaks the surface tension, it won't pop back up. It isn't that durable either, but grass is pretty plentiful. I have no idea if this would work in current of any significance.

Anyone else have any makeshift indicators they have used?
