Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: PHWFF Fly Tying Marathon at Quantico

I like this one, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0741BSG3R/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 it will run on 4 AAs or it has a USB power cable that will connect to a power pack. Only shortcoming is that it could be taller - but you could also buy two and have more light. Jo-Ann's has Ott Lites on sale for 40 or 50% off - most require extension cords though.

Eric,
I'm a lefty as well and thought I'd share a trick I found for watching fly tying videos on YouTube.  Any YouTube video can be played in a "mirror" format on a computer - which makes the fly tying instructor left handed.  Attached are instructions I made for Chrome web broswer.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Prescription sunglasses

Hey, thanks everybody - Greg Feder's caution I think wins the day - it's also the same reason I don't like chest packs or Richardson flyboxes (and I was gifted one!): GOTTA SEE MY FEET. So I'll stick with distance corrected shades and flip focals - maybe just up the diopter

Consider Rx distance correction with flip down magnifiers for knot-tying, etc.

Reminder- if you see a clump of white paper in and along the woods do not approach it. It's used tp.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Volunteer opportunities on the Tidal Potomac

Our friend, Chris Campo, the Fish and Wildlife Biologist for DC's Department of Energy & Environment, is seeking volunteers for several upcoming outings. This is a great way to encourage our neighbors to share our love of the tidal Potomac. The times I've volunteered I have been very impressed with the thought and preparation that Chris and his team put into them.

If any of these suit your schedule, please reach out to Chris (christopher.campo@dc.gov) to raise your hand. This is a great way to encourage our neighbors to share our love of the tidal Potomac. I'm sure you'll have fun and feel good about helping out.

April 23rd - Hains Point Community Day
  • Offering free fishing sessions (~40 anglers/hour) from 8:30AM to 12:30PM as part of NPS-NAMA's broader Hains Point Community Day event. Volunteers will provide basic spincast (push-button) casting instruction, and assist with any related tasks (netting/unhooking fish, re-rigging rods as needed, etc.).
April 29th - Shad Fishing at Fletcher's Cove with Howard University, NPT, NPS-CHOH
  • Leading a shad fishing activity for approx. 15-25 Howard University students, with support from the National Park Trust and NPS- CHOH staff. Volunteers will help with spinning rod setup, basic casting instruction, and land-based shad fishing. Tentative timeframe 8AM-12:00PM.
May 20th - Shad/Multi-Species Fishing at Fletcher's Cove with Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, NPT, NPS-CHOH
  • Leading a shad/multi-species fishing activity for approx. 35-45 youth and adults from Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, with support from the National Park Trust and NPS-CHOH staff. Depending on river conditions and the status of the shad run, this may become more of a perch/catfishing day. Will also set up a Backyard Bass practice casting station for younger kids/families. Tentative timeframe 8AM-12:00PM.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Raft access for Shad?

Launching with a trailer at Fletchers is prohibited.  You can carry your raft from the lot down.

People will sometimes unlawfully open the gate or move the railroad ties that cordon off the lower parking area at the bottom of the cove and back down and dump their boats in the water there.

might just be no trailers in the lower parking lot where you have to deal with the tunnel

Hi everyone -

Looking for some advice as it relates to accessing the Potomac for the shad run with a raft (clearly I'm already getting excited about the spring).

I know the rowboats are available for rent from Fletchers, but does anyone use drift boat style rafts to fish shad? If so, do you launch them from the makeshift launch at the edge of the parking lot in Fletchers or another spot?

A buddy and I have a Stealthcraft Hooligan XL raft  and I was hoping to use it to get out there, but I know access is limited.  We plan to put an e-propulsion outboard on it soon, but I would love to avoid the long, slow ferry up river from Gravelly point if possible.

Any advice would certainly be appreciated.
