Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Poconos fishing recommendations

Ha, that would provide a useful (and ironically fitting) purpose for my can of red mucilin.

The lightest rod I own is a 3-weight, and it's a toy for sure.  So are all the others though.  Toys for a man-child.

Gene,

I own a 0-weight Sage SLT.  We can't all have nice toys.  Use whatever works.  Have you tried braiding Beth's hair for ultralight furled leaders?

Lightest line weight possible -- gotcha.

Does 30' of 60-pound mono equate to a 000 wt. floating line?  I'll just color it with an orange sharpie.

There's no good fishing in the Poconos.  Just drive north to the Delaware.  Nope… no trout streams whatsoever.  Just city slickers vacationing and bears terrorizing families.

If you decide to press your luck, you'll find a few spots will hold some fish, and although they're not world caliber class A trout streams, they'll keep you occupied.

Closest spot to fish is going to be the Lackawaxen.  Fun fishing on river left from Kimbles Road down to McKean Road.  Hint – if you see a pipe sticking out of the shoulder of the road, it's an artesian spring.  Drink up.  Rainbows in that stretch stocked each spring, but below it's fairly warm and above it will be a little low.  Don't try fishing up in Hawley as it's too warm, unless you want to target fallfish and smallmouth bass.

WARNING – if you hear sirens while you're fishing, GET OUT OF THE RIVER.  They release water from Wallenpaupack occasionally for power needs.  They're also releasing a more consistent release to keep flows in Montague NJ on the Delaware high enough to keep salt water out of the water tables closer to Philadelphia.  Someone will drive p and down the river to warn anyone they see, but don't take any chances.  Also stay on the river left (north) bank since you can scramble up that bank and get back to your car in an emergency.

If you want the Shenandoah-style experience without the mountainous climb, you can drive down Rte. 209 towards Tom's Creek.  It's a class A trout fishery, all C&R.  Wild brook trout, and pretty little plunge pools.  Bring the smallest line weight you have.

If you want the big water experience, drive Rte 6 W to 191 N about 40-45 minutes north to the West Branch Delaware downriver to Bard Parker. The entire river is open until October 15th (closed after to protect spawning trout), except where PA & NY share the river (PA gamelands).  From there downriver to the junction pool (Bard Parker access) the river is open C&R only.  Bring streamers, some bigger caddis, and a bunch of tiny Baetis.  Be warned the D is not a river for pocket water nymphers.  Bring your A-game.

Hope that helps.

I'm staying at the Woodloch resort in the Poconos this upcoming weekend and
am looking for either a good guide recommendation or preferably any DIY
location recommendations for the area.
