{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: New Fly Fisherman- Gunpowder River

Hi Kyle! Welcome to the sport! I can assure you that you are in for a lot of discovery and joy. Regarding learning, there are so many great resources online these days. Personally I learned how to fly fish from magazines, mostly. But now you've got youtube, the Orvis Learning Center, the Orvis News Blog, Midcurrent.com, flyfisherman.com, and on and on (also the Orvis Fly Fishing Guide Podcast - as you can see I'm a bit of an Orvis boy). I would start with the Orvis Learning Center and the podcast, and go from there.

Regarding getting out fishing, I would offer to take you out if you were around Northern Virginia, but when I go up to fish the Gunpowder, it's usually a commando mission to escape my in-laws (kidding, they know I love them). Besides, the thrill of learning, the anticipation of a trip, all that is part of the joy of the sport. You will have your mess ups along the way, no doubt, but try and just learn from them and don't beat yourself up about it. If I thought I knew everything about fly fishing, I would quit today.

If you can ever get yourself to a Beer Tie, I'm sure you'll be able to find someone to go fishing with.
