Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Airlie Resort?

Thanks guys! I'll throw a rod and a box of flies in the car. Going to be a dawn patrol mission for an hour or so before the wife gets up, but I'll post back with a report.

Have fun.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Quick Cape Cod Trip Report: Stripers/Bluefish on the Fly

Did a 1/2-day guided trip off the Oceanside of Cape Cod earlier this week…while not peak season (that would be June), got into a good number of stripers and bluefish—sometimes mixed schools of stripers and bluefish.

In those mixed schools, lost a lot of flies due to the toothy blues slicing through the 20# test tippet after a hook-up. That was resolved with a change to a wire leader.

Largest striper brought to the net was 30" and the largest blue was 26". We were using a 9-wt with a sink line and fishing the rips and wherever the gulls were hitting bait balls.

Got my knuckles rapped more than once by the reel knob/handle when a fish went on an unexpected run—ouch!

If interested, some pics can be found on Facebook "Pete Brookes" and Instagram "Brookes Outdoors."

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fletcher's Cove? - 7/23/22

I meant to reply to the entire thread, but ended up just replying to Owen.  Dyke Marsh, over near Belle Haven Marina on the Potomac, used to be a decent area to fish for bass and sunfish.  I would guess the snakeheads might be in there now too, it's been decades since I've been.  It's a pretty straight forward hike in, but I would recommend going at (more or less) high tide.

4MR has fish. The south banks have a lot of brush so casting is a challenge. North banks are more grassy like with a steep slope to the water, but castable. A power piling near Mt Vernon bridge often has a small hole with a small bass or two. It can be easily cast to from the North bank.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} August Events

Thanks for inviting us, Herman!

Speaker Jeff Kelble was super knowledgeable on the particulars of the spawning window and how many factors relate to it in the Shenandoah and Potomac systems. And I met some great guys and picked up some great smallie tips.

Best,
Owen

Also, if I may plug, Potomac River Smallmouth Club meeting Wednesday next week, July 27th.  Our speaker is Jeff Kelble, Ashby Gap Adventures on, well, smallmouth bass spawns in the area.  Join by Zoom or in person in McLean.  Happy to share details.

Thanks,

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fletcher's Cove? - 7/23/22

I've got a 5 weight WildWater combo. A few hoppers, a few caddis flies, a few  emergers, and some more colorful flies.

No waders yet, but got a few flies at District Angling last week.

I headed to Huntsman Lake to get in some casting practice, but I'm thinking there are some better waters around here.

I've heard 4Mile Run isn't bad and Lake Cook is stocked?

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fletcher's Cove? - 7/23/22

Kevin,

The answer is not that short, or easy. It depends on where you are standing at the moment you are fishing. Depending on where you are fishing you need to know which set of fishing regulations you are bound by. DC  Regulations for DC waters. MD Regulations above Little Falls. Potomac River Fisheries Commission regulations are enforced downstream of Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

DC owns the Potomac River below the MHWL from Hunting Creek south of Alexandria Virginia upstream to Little Falls. You need a DC license to fish from the Virginia Shore or from a boat.

Virginia has reciprocal license agreement with Maryland. The Potomac River upstream of Little Falls and downstream of Woodrow Wilson Bridge is owned by Maryland.  Above Little Falls, anglers with state freshwater licenses in Virginia or Maryland may fish the Potomac River from both banks. Between Woodrow Wilson Bridge and Rt. 301 valid Virginia freshwater and saltwater (excluding county licenses), Potomac River Fisheries Commission, and Maryland Bay sport licenses are all honored on the mainstem Potomac and Maryland tributaries up to the demarcation lines; all of these same licenses, except the Virginia saltwater licenses, are honored on the Virginia tributaries up to demarcation lines.

Hope this helps.

Daniel

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} August Events

Hey William and All,

If you want to join us in person, please show up at the Fairfax County Government/Police Station in McLean next Wednesday 7/27 at around 7:15PM.  Address is 1437 Balls Hill Rd, McLean, VA 22101.  We're probably the only group using the public meeting rooms that night, so it shouldn't be hard to find us.

If you want to join us over Zoom, please be patient.  Our admin will generate that this weekend and I'll post it here.

Re: Re[2]: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: TPFR Trip to Rappahannock River!

Weather and watersheds are funny things. Good info (for future trips) here, I think. We fished Sat. afternoon in some pretty OK turbidity numbers by my experience. I know that different waters fish differently, but I've caught fish in water with turbidity in the 20's (and 30's). Granted, that's usually a presentation where you can hit them in the face.
But, even with all the rain on Sat. evening, the Rapp was probably very fishable on Sun. am., and didn't spike until Sunday afternoon.

Great to meet you too, Bill! We hadn't seen you float by and saw that your car was gone, so we were pretty sure that you made the call to pack up :-)

We got lucky with that weather blowing over quickly, especially since most of us were fishing around the middle island across from Clore Brothers and couldn't get back out quickly. The deluge I hit on the way home would not have been fun to fish through.

I think we tried everything, but to no avail. The water flow would have been alright, but they weren't holding where I thought they might out of the main current or just weren't on the feed due to all the rain and mud.

Dan's Restaurant and Taphouse looks good, William: https://drnth.com/. We'll have to get a group up there to Beaver or Antietam when the water is cool enough.

Best,
Owen

To: <tidal-potoma...@googlegroups.com>

Come join TRFR on the Rappahannock River for a casual day of fishing.

When:     Saturday July16th   2:00 pm

Where:    Red Dragon Brewery

Address: 1419 Princess Anne St, Fredericksburg, VA 22401

We will meet at Red Dragon Brewery for a beer and some tacos (there should be a taco truck at the Red Dragon on Saturday 16th in the afternoon )Then head out to Rappahannock River to fish the area between the route 1 bridge and I95 bridge. The primary game fish species in this stretch of the Rappahannock is smallmouth bass, additionally there are largemouth bass, snakehead, carp, catfish, and panfish.

A few things about wading :  First of all parts of the river bottom in this stretch of the Rappahannock are rocky, steep sloping and deep. Highly recommend wearing cleated wading shoes and having a wading  staff. Since it will be literally the middle of summer. You may want to wet wade, in just a pair of shorts instead of using a pair waders. So if you fall in, is it to easer to recover.  Also if there is heavy precipitation in the area or upstream in the watershed. The river could rise to a dangerous level quickly. Bottom line is wading can be potentially dangerous. So at your own risk.

A few suggestions for flies : Woolly Buggers, Clouser Minnows, CK Baitfish, Kreelex, Clawdad, Poppers, Gurglers any other bait fish or  crayfish imitations.  This by no means is a comprehensive list.

A few other things you may want to have with you : Headlamp, First Aid Kit , change of dry clothes in your car.

If there is a high amount of precipitation in the days or week before the trip. In river level is high and/or high turbidity level. This trip may wind up being rescheduled. If that happens future date TBA.

For more information about Rappahannock River see the VA site.

Look forward to seeing you all there!
