Unfortunately, I won't be in attendance. I will be in Newfoundland on the northern peninsula flyfishing for Atlantic salmon and then in New Brunswick on the Miramichi.

Come on out, whether you are a novice, intermediate, or advanced caster, it is all fun to work on solving casting problems and casting challenges, particularly for shad.
If you are just getting started, this is a great way to meet people who can help.  There will be casting instructors on hand.
If you are preparing for an upcoming trip and looking to re-fresh your casting skills, this is a great opportunity.

on a separate note, I bought a 1wt, 6ft rod on ebay which is fantastic for bluegills with a hopper/dropper setup.  I was fishing away at a local lake, and had caught a ton of panfish (couple of doubles) when something grabbed by nymph and started dragging my kayak out toward the center of the lake.  I thought the rod was going to explode at any minute, but after 15 minutes of very strong fighting,  I pulled in a 6-7 pound catfish that went right back in.

Search the forum for wading discussions. Don't go through the tunnel in your boat. It's full of spider webs. Cold water where roaches stream enters. Hot water where pentagon effluent enters.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Roaches Run and 1wt bluegills (separate)

It's rare for it to be clear - in the dozen or so times that I've fished it, I think only one or twice has it been clear water. It's mostly brown with very little visibility. If you're fishing around the connection to Gravelly Point, I prefer an incoming tide. As for the rest of the pond, I'm not sure it matters. Launching/Landing your boat will definitely be easiest at high tide, that much I know.

You can find largemouth bass, carp, catfish, snakeheads, bluegill, crappie, yellow perch, gar and more there. Have fun! And share some photos of what you catch!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Roaches Run and 1wt bluegills (separate)

Is Roaches Run near DCA worth fishing?  Is it impacted by tide flow?  How easy to launch a kayak here?

on a separate note, I bought a 1wt, 6ft rod on ebay which is fantastic for bluegills with a hopper/dropper setup.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Anybody interested in joining me on a Shenandoah or Rappahannock Float This Week?

Hey there TPFR - I was supposed to be going to Maine to fish this week, but had to cancel because my fishing partner broke a rib.  So, I'm here in DC, and trying to make the best of it by at least making a couple of day trips.

Anybody interested in joining me for a float on the Shenandoah or Rappahanock (or maybe the Juniata) this week?  My plan would be to rent a kayak from one of the outfitters and use their shuttle service.  Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday look like good days to me.  Let me know if you're interested in joining!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Car break ins at Fetchers

Just a heads up to make sure you lock your car and don't leave any valuables inside if you are fishing at fletchers.  I got my car broken into yesterday evening in the upper lot.  Car was unattended for only 45 minutes so they were likely stalking it.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Rappahannock River Shuttle

Hi all,

I'm looking to do an overnight from Kelly's Ford to Mott's this coming Monday and Tuesday but am having a hard time find a shuttle service for me and my boat. Any suggestions? Virginia Outdoor Center is not open those days.

Thanks!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Caveat Emptor

Beware a too-good-to-be-true price on houses with frontage on the Yellowstone.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Prospects for fishing near North Shores Beach in Rehoboth

Thanks for all the advice.  I didn't have a lot of luck while I was there (my lack of stripping basket was probably to blame), but I'm definitely up for trying again.  If anyone else is looking to go, the beaches weren't bad at all - at least on the north end.  I'm guessing they brought in a bunch of sand before memorial day weekend.

I have family that has a place close to DE beaches and have spent a lot of time down there over the years.  I always had the best luck at Indian River Inlet starting in the "North Pocket" (North side of inlet up against the rock pile in surf) and then walking/fishing north from there.  Look for troughs/deeper pockets close in the surf as you walk.  Watch for baitfish and birds action.  In June I have caught schoolie stripers, bluefish, and flounder/weakfish on occasion.   I often use Clouser Minnows at 1/0, 2/0 or bigger.  My experience has been that the fish are either there in close and you'll get some hits or no action at all .   I agree with the comments on having stripping basket;  it can be maddening without in the surf.    Unfortunately there is a ton of beach erosion that Rehoboth/Dewey/Bethany are trying to combat, so that may impact things as well (especially some of the trough/structure in surf that was there months before).

I'd say it is still fun getting out there and trying if you can during changing tides. I always prefer the incoming High Tide.  Good luck Josh!

Thanks,
SCK

Can't speak to the fishing in Delaware, Josh, but you absolutely need a stripping basket in the surf. That is, unless you enjoy having your feet lassoed together by your fly line. You can buy a purpose made stripping basket, but it's not necessary. Go to the Dollar store and buy a cheap dish drainer or plastic basin. Drill a few holes and make two slits in back to thread a belt through and you're in business. Just make sure it's deep enough to hold line and experiment with where to situate it on your hips.

We are looking to head up to Rehoboth in June for a week or so and I was thinking about taking my 8 wt. with me to see what I could find wade fishing opportunities within 30 minutes or so of North Shores.  I've never fished in the surf with a fly rod, so I'd be interested in checking it out.

I read through the threads on the forum about fishing near Rehoboth, but they are mostly about fishing later in the summer or the fall.  I was hoping that someone on here would have advice on places to fish, species to target, patterns, and when to fish for early- to mid-June.

Also, is a stripping basket absolutely necessary? From my preliminary research, it seems that the answer is yes, but I'd rather not have to purchase one if I don't have to right now.

Thanks,

Josh

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} TPFR Trip to Rappahannock River!

Come join TRFR on the Rappahannock River for a casual day of fishing.

When:     Saturday July16th   2:00 pm

Where:    Red Dragon Brewery

Address: 1419 Princess Anne St, Fredericksburg, VA 22401

We will meet at Red Dragon Brewery for a beer and some tacos (there should be a taco truck at the Red Dragon on Saturday 16th in the afternoon )Then head out to Rappahannock River to fish the area between the route 1 bridge and I95 bridge. The primary game fish species in this stretch of the Rappahannock is smallmouth bass, additionally there are largemouth bass, snakehead, carp, catfish, and panfish.

A few things about wading :  First of all parts of the river bottom in this stretch of the Rappahannock are rocky, steep sloping and deep. Highly recommend wearing cleated wading shoes and having a wading  staff. Since it will be literally the middle of summer. You may want to wet wade, in just a pair of shorts instead of using a pair waders. So if you fall in, is it to easer to recover.  Also if there is heavy precipitation in the area or upstream in the watershed. The river could rise to a dangerous level quickly. Bottom line is wading can be potentially dangerous. So at your own risk.

A few suggestions for flies : Woolly Buggers, Clouser Minnows, CK Baitfish, Kreelex, Clawdad, Poppers, Gurglers any other bait fish or  crayfish imitations.  This by no means is a comprehensive list.

A few other things you may want to have with you : Headlamp, First Aid Kit , change of dry clothes in your car.

If there is a high amount of precipitation in the days or week before the trip. In river level is high and/or high turbidity level. This trip may wind up being rescheduled. If that happens future date TBA.

For more information about Rappahannock River see the VA site.

Look forward to seeing you all there!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Georgetown Canals

Hi All,

Planning to fish the Georgetown canal early next week targeting carp and whatever else there is to catch.  Any pointers on where/where not to go?

Initial plan was to start on 29th street and just walk up to see what looked fishable.

I have seen people fishing it before, so I am assuming it is allowed.

Any advice here is appreciated.

-Jimmy

final other thing: If you're going to wade anywhere bigger than a small/medium trout stream, especially for smallies or on the North Branch, check the water level/CFS before you go!

I'm sure that will do the trick, Greg. (We'll visit you in the hospital 😀)

Seriously though, great notice, and thanks for forwarding. In general, I also give the streams and rivers 2-3 days after any heavy rain event to let the e. coli and other bugs settle down.

Hope to fish with you again soon!
