{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Seneca Breaks Potomac

I have fished seneca breaks, seneca creek, and various sections of the monocacy for years.  From 2012-2016 all of these areas were fabulous for smallies.  I caught my pb at the time (19.5 incher) on the monocacy near pinecliff park.  For years I would go to seneca creek near calleva and pull out numerous smallies under 12 inches.  Since 2018, everything has changed.  I am lucky to catch 1 smallie in a days worth of fishing in all of these areas.  Seems the high water and pollution has greatly effected the smallie fishing in all of the upper potomac up through harpers ferry.  The only smallie fishing I do now is on the NF/SF of Shennandoah and the Susquehanna.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Seneca Breaks Potomac

I was bike riding up there on the towpath on Sunday. River is up and looks like molten milk chocolate. You can get to Seneca Breaks via either Violettes Lock at the upstream end or Pennyfield Lock at the downstream end. It can be rugged wading even when the river is low. Be sure to check river gages for flow and height.  I haven't fished there in 2 or 3 years.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Copying a mepps spinner

I'd be curious of other extenuating factors too: were you fishing behind someone? Maybe they were putting fish down after catching a few. Were your flies in the same part of the water column as the conventional fishermen? Were they getting a different, continuous movement with their lure but you were slowly stripping it in?

One technique I'll try with clousers and smallies is what we call the New England or cape cod strip where you hold the butt/reel in your armpit and strip line with both hands (I'm sure there's a technical term for this). With this try different speeds, add pauses, etc. until you key in on what works.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Copying a mepps spinner

Not a perfect match by any means, but have a look at the Coyote. It's like a Clouser with a small spinner blade. It's not going to have the same thump as a true inline spinner, but it'll add a little extra flash.

You can tie your own or buy them right from Umpqua.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: TPFR on the Gunpowder - Sept 12 [LOST AND FOUND]

Thanks for putting this together.  We had a great time getting acquainted with this stretch of the Gunpowder.

I do have a lost and found situation.  I found an item near the old bridge trestle on the North bank and there was no one else around at the time.  If you're missing a very large fishing accessory, please respond to my post or email me.  If you can describe it accurately, I will make arrangements with you to get it back.

Thanks,
Herman

You get a photo-realistic aerial view as if you were in a drone following the rivers and passing through towns and farms. For a fantastic and fantastically long (5,000 km) tour, start almost anywhere in Wyoming. These aren't really a tour of rivers as much as a way to tour the greater landscape of a continent.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Casting Church - Sun 19 Sep

Just a reminder that this coming Sunday is the usual casting church meeting at Fletcher's Cove in combination with the Fletcher's Fest.

This is just a special move of the casting meeting to accommodate last weekend's Gunpowder trip (I caught three bluegill, yeah!  (Wah, wah, wah)) and to be part of the Fletcher's Fest this weekend.  Next month, back to the second Sunday (10 Oct).

Casting church is 8-11am.  See you there.  Come on out for the Festivities too!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Rhode Island - stripers no albies

Had a great 2 days with Rene Letourneau of OnTheRocksCharters.  We were looking for false albacore, but had to settle for stripers and bluefish  on the fly.  Some really big, chunky fish.  Rumor was the unusual schools of tuna just off the coast scared the albies away, but if anyone has better insight as to the storms or water temp, etc, would love to know.

Fantastic place to fish, and many more wind options with all the rocks and coves.  Scenery also incredible there.  We left out of Fort Adams in NewPort.

Water was audibly boiling when the fish were on the feed near the mouth of the Narrow River.

Orvis gear (Orvis endorsed guide), heavy sinking lines to cut the wind and pick up some lower down fish.  Peanut bunker flies, 20lb tippet.

Many thanks to all those who organized and participated.
As a newby to the group, I was warmly welcomed and it was really great to meet up face-to-face and talk flies. During this time of Covid I felt comfortable meeting in the open air.
A special thanks to Misha, under whose careful supervision I caught my first brown trout. An important rite of passage in my Scottish family of origin.
I'm also new to the area and I really enjoyed being shown a new river to fish and given a guided tour of some of the best spots.
All in all it was the best of all fun days' out. More please!
Stay safe

Many thanks to Brook and everyone else who organized and attended!

I had a great day sharing a few techniques with new friends. We mostly
focused on casts that are much easier to do and see on moving water (like
water hauls, roll casts, and reach mends). Beautiful weather and a gorgeous
river with rising trout to fish to added to the experience.

As for feedback, maybe a map of the stretch we are fishing could be
collectively annotated by those who know it best according to current
conditions? "Swing tricos through the deeper water here." "Look for risers
along the banks here." "Nice riffles at here and here for #16 nymphs under
a hopper or beetle." That sort of thing.

But that's about all I have to suggest, which just shows how successful
this trip was.

Best,
Owen

Hey all - we are planning a Gunpowder Fishing Day on the water with TPFR.

The Gunpowder Fishing Day will be free form - show up, meet folks, chew the fat, go fish, and relax amidst the beautiful surroundings of the Gunpowder.  While not intended to be a casting church, If you arrive before 10 am, some casting Instructors and the other usual suspects from the Sunday Casting Church will be on hand to help.

If the Gunpowder Fishing Day is successful (meaning you attend) then we may add this type of event to TPFR a few times each year.

If you haven't been to the Gunpowder Falls, this will be a fun way to fish this tailwater of the Pretty Boy Reservoir, just north of Baltimore and put some of those casting skills to use.  For more information about Gunpowder Falls see the MD site.

Hope to see you there.

This gathering will follow the same guidelines for health and safety that we use for the Casting Churches and Beer Ties.   As of August 21, 2021 neither the State of Maryland nor Baltimore County have mask requirements relevant to this event. Please use your best judgment for your personal safety and that of others, if you are ill or suspect you might be, rest up at home.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: TPFR on the Gunpowder - Sept 12

Many thanks to Brook and everyone else who organized and attended!

I had a great day sharing a few techniques with new friends. We mostly focused on casts that are much easier to do and see on moving water (like water hauls, roll casts, and reach mends). Beautiful weather and a gorgeous river with rising trout to fish to added to the experience.

As for feedback, maybe a map of the stretch we are fishing could be collectively annotated by those who know it best according to current conditions? "Swing tricos through the deeper water here." Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Colonial Beach

Brian,

Nice work! That is an amazing fish. What line were you throwing when targeting fish in 15-20 feet? I have a tough time getting my fly down to those depths, even when using a tungsten tip.

Slightly off topic, any recommendations for an inshore light tackle/fly captain in the chincoteague area? Taking a family vacation down that way in late September and would love to set something up. Thank you in advance!

Brian Hepler here…

I have fishing friends and relatives in the Cobb Island area - which is  just south  of Colonial Beach - on the Maryland side of the Potomac.

I have fly-fished the Colonial Beach and surrounding areas quite a bit over the years.

Below is a pic of me, with a nice fall bass that I was able to tease off of an old oyster bar, in about 15 to 20 feet of water.

You can call or text me at 571-289-5892.

The question is, What do you bring to the Beer Tie?

Well, if you want to participate in some fly tying, bring your mobile tying kit.

Other than that, just bring yourself.

See you there.

It has been a long while since our last Beer Tie, and there are many new people coming to our casting churches, so a bit of refresh on what Beer Tie is.  The Beer Tie is our monthly meeting. It is largely a social meeting. We talk about fishing, and we tie some fly patterns.  And we drink a little beer. This is a great opportunity to get to know a little about flyfishing in the area and meet some fellow enthusiasts. We welcome all, even if you don't yet fly fish but are curious about the sport.

We will have monthly Beer Ties. The schedule is the second Monday of the month. Upcoming dates are:
13 Sep, 11 Oct, 8 Nov, 13 Dec

Covid safety: Recognize that we are in a social situation, and many will be eating and drinking, and so many will be unmasked. Right now, there is no requirement by Colony Grill or Virginia to be masked. However, if you are ill or suspect you might be, please respect the health of others and rest up at home.
