If you could fly for free where would you go from the end of October or the first of November?  Pyrenees in Spain? Northern New Mexico? Guam?

Anyone else see this absolute unit of a smallie from the weekend?

Stats are below:

Guide: Blane Chocklett

Angler: Brian Strife

Length: 25.25

Girth: 17.5

I believe the length x girth calculation puts the fish over 9 pounds which would be state record had it been killed. Props to them for releasing it.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: The Confluence

I did the Hole in the Wall to Motts Run float via VOC a few weeks ago - it is a nice day-long float that gives you plenty of time to fish.

Maybe get on at Rappahannock River Outfitters at 32645 River Mill Rd, Richardsville, VA 22736 - see attached.

Or have VA Outdoor Center (VOC, at www.playva.com) take you on a shuttled trip above the fall line (Fredericksburg city) on the Rappahannock? For example, the Hole-in-the-wall to VOC trip is 10 miles on the water and takes ~6 hrs (includes some modest rapids). It's a good time.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Vero Beach FL area

Thanks, Trent! Yes, I did cancel the trip, but I rescheduled for late October with the same plan. I'll probably bring my 9-weight just because I hate my 8-weight, and my 9 is already rigged with an intermediate with a clear tip. I'll look up Whites, and let you know how it goes.

I rarely go below 25lbs for leader either. some of the beaches have deeper troughs and I will use weighted flies like Clousers quite a bit but usually I opt for smaller lighter flies that imitate white baits. When people say that Snook are on the beach, that can mean that they are within inches of dry sand so keep your eyes peeled. You will also run into Jacks, Ladyfish, and the occasional Poon as well. Size up the Poons and your gear before you cast at them or risk getting spooled. Pop in and see the folks at Whites Tackle in Vero or in Fort Pierce if you head down that way.

My general plan is to walk the beach in the early evening as the sun is dropping behind me and throw chartreuse and white clousers if I see anything. Does anyone have more specific advice on better choices for fly patterns or beaches?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Does fishing have a future - WSJ

I'm a little late to the party here, but to throw in my two cents:

I think kids get busier as they get older. I fished way more as a grade schooler (6-12) than I did as a teenager (13-17). After elementary school, things get busier, more homework, more sports, dating, etc.

My heaviest fishing years were when I was single in my 20s, when I would get out on some kind of water a couple times a week. Now as a working stiff with a kid, I consider a couple outings a month as a success.

I think the point about changing disposable time/income across demographics is important. Younger generations have worse job prospects and higher student loan debt than previous generations, which forces young people to work longer hours to make ends meet. While fishing can be cheap or expensive as you want it to be, you can't fish if you have to work 70+ hours per week.
