{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: 7 DAYS and counting -- TPFR Fall Fishing on the Gunpowder - Sept 25

Huge thanks to Brook Rolter and everyone who made this second Gunpowder outing happen.

The water was so skinny I barely got wet, but Gregg and Matt put in the work and doubled up with some nice sized browns right before the afternoon storm in the Bunker Hill area.

Best,
Owen

The Gunpowder Fishing Day will be free form - show up, meet folks, chew the fat, go fish, and relax amidst the beautiful surroundings of the Gunpowder.  If you arrive before 10am, some of the other usual suspects from the Sunday Casting Church will be on hand to help.   We will also have a few anglers that are more knowledgeable about the Gunpowder River at the event to help folks that are new to this location or would like to improve their knowledge about this river.

If you haven't been to the Gunpowder, this will be a fun way to fish this tailwater of the Pretty Boy Reservoir, just north of Baltimore and put some of those casting skills to use.

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Loch Raven - other bass recommendations?

If you're looking for the combination of boat rental + decent chance of catching some kind of bass + within two hours of DC, it's a big list.  It gets complicated since a lot of the boat rental places go to weekends only after Labor Day, so check facility websites or call.

I like Occoquan Reservoir in VA, with boat rentals at Fountainhead Park (Fairfax side) or Lake Ridge (Prince William side), but picking apart a bigger lake is a challenge.  Good largemouth population, catchable enough that there are frequent low stakes local tournaments.

I've never fished it, near Motts Run Reservoir that Brian posted above, there is Hunting Run Lake, which VA DFW promotes as one of the better bass lakes in the state.

Little Seneca Lake, which is in Black Hills Park near Germantown, has gin clear water and giant bass that I can't get to bite.  You may want to try the smaller Clopper Lake, which confusingly is in Seneca Creek State Park in Gaithersburg to the south.  I have caught largemouth there.

Belle Haven Yacht Club in Alexandria has boat rentals on the tidal Potomac and is probably the closest and easiest boat rental near DC where you can find decent access to the "classic" bass and snakehead waters of the tidal river.

There are more rental places, and if you're open to fishing from a rental kayak or SUP, that opens up yet more spots.  Cheap plug to join the PRSC meeting on 9/28 which I posted elsewhere.  I hope this helps.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Potomac River Smallmouth Club September Meeting 9/28 (Wednesday)

Hello Everyone,

Potomac River Smallmouth Club meeting is at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, September 28th.  We will be meeting in-person at the McLean Government Center at 1437 Balls Hill Road in McLean, VA.  Yes, it's the police station.

Our topic this month is "Kayaks for freshwater fishing and tournaments."  You can hear me yap about my very basic off the shelf kayak for a few minutes before I hand it over to our after market customizing members.

Meeting is also going to be held over Zoom, reach out to me if you're interested and can't make it in person.

Thanks,
Herman

Additionally, we will work on FFI Casting Skills challenges for anyone interested.

Come on out, whether you are a novice, intermediate, or advanced caster, it is all fun to work on solving casting problems and casting challenges, particularly for shad.
If you are just getting started, this is a great way to meet people who can help.  There will be casting instructors on hand.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Richmond guide recommendations

Dana,

First the disclaimers, I have no relationship with this shop and I have not used them for guiding.

There is a relatively new shop flyshop/guide service in Richmond called Current Culture.  Website is https://www.currentculturefly.com/.  As I said, I have not used them, but they spoke to the Falmouth Flats Fly Fishers club in Fredericksburg and they sounded good and I have heard good comments from folks I know and trust.  They are an independent fly shop/guide service.  They were a guide service to start, then started a brick and mortar store this past year and have been at the Fly Show in Doswell in the past.

I haven't fished with them, but the guys from current culture fly shop were at the virginia wine and fly fishing fest in January and seemed like really good guys when i chatted with them.  They guide on the James in Richmond and would be worth a call.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} closest wade fishing to Arlington and upcoming events?

I have been having some success thanks to folks' ideas - Riverbend Park (MD), Violette's Lock (skunked but only one trip), Rapp in Falmouth, Cabin John area. Haven't tried any of the feeder creeks yet - been a little worried they are too warm or too dirty. Excited to start reading over my new book Wade and Shoreline Fishing the Potomac by Steve Moore (from Amazon) which looks like it has tons of access points.

Once winter rolls in, there's a variety of seasonal trout stocking schemes in the area.  Does VDGIF/VDWR still stock Holmes Run?  Otherwise the closest to you in Arlington is probably Accotink Run in Annandale.

I hit Seneca Breaks this weekend w/ my daughter :-)

I was throwing some clousers and an artic-streamer and she had jointed rapala and a mepps black fury.

Nada-zip-zilch. I would expect a whack from a 3" suicide smallie, but nooooo!

Saw a suface blow-up with bait showering. I worked my way over carefully and swung through- no one home.

Super-fishy looking spot, but I confess we didn't see or move anything. Not even panfish.

Love to hear what others think about this area.

Hi, I am new in the mid-Atlantic area as of January but literally just moved from Baltimore where I fished the Gunpowder weekly to Arlington this weekend. I am looking for a few super close wade fishing locations to Arlington for my weekly outings - I assume this would be smallmouth, hoping to stay within about an hour or less from Arlington for my weekly trips with only occasional forays for trout which I believe is about 1.5 hours a way whether Gunpowder which I am familiar with or in Shenandoah National Park.

Can anybody provide wade fishing locations/google pindrops within 30 mins to an hour from Arlington? I haven't had time to research with heavy workload but going tomorrow on my afternoon off. Not asking for specific holes just where to access/park.

Also, I joined the club in January knowing I would move to VA but have never received any emails I don't think about events - tying, fishing, etc. though I see Beer Tie and other things mentioned on this forum I don't keep up with it since google requires us, as far as I can tell, to tie it to a google account which I don't read.

Is there any mailing list or other places to find out what is happening? Also, is there any way to tie this google group to another account so I can have the traffic delivered to me?

Appreciate your assistance on any of these many questions - wanting to get actively involved...

Second Sunday of the month coming up, and so we will have our casting get together on Sunday, 11 September at Fletcher's Cove from 8am to 11am.

This Church will be free form, just working on whatever people would like.

If you are preparing for an upcoming trip and looking to re-fresh your casting skills, this is a great opportunity.

And yes, I will be there.   Regan

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Friends of Lefty Kreh

Our PHW outing for today was cancelled, so I took a ride up to Frederick for the unveiling of the maquette (a preliminary model of a sculpture) of a sculpture of Lefty Kreh to be placed in Culler Lake in Frederick's Baker Park.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} BEER TIE - Mon 12 Sep

We will be tying Clouser Minnows at the learning table. Cold temps will be here soon and the bass will start putting on weight for winter. This is a must have fly for our fishery. A great pattern to swing at dark for stripers at Gravelly.

The Monday following Casting Church, Monday 12 September will be our Beer-Tie at Colony Grill.

Come on out and meet your fellow anglers, bring your fly tying material and your fly tying questions.

Bring your fish stories.  Also, we will have a few raffles for some fly rods, reels, fishing equipment.  I will post pictures of the gear this weekend.

Festivities begin at 7pm.

See you there.  Yes, I will be there,  Regan
