[homefamilyarticles] Bye 2021. Hi, 2022.

Greetings our dearly beloved friend.

Myra & Myla

Despite the horrors of 2020, I had my twins in 2020 after 13 years of delay, 8 miscarriages, even one divorce due to infertility. I am grateful to God for His Mercies. 2021 will be even greater, just believe!

Bye 2021.

Hi, 2022.

Best regards and God bless you.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: trout streams

Awesome read.  Didn't know about the closure of the delayed harvest area.  Hopefully that will reopen soon.

Basically, I'd suggest focusing on thermally stable waters like tailwaters or spring creeks this time of year.

Good luck!

Hi Forks,
Sorry for the short notice. There will be a TPFR Outing this Sunday November 21st. Catoctin Park Trout Outing. Rally point will be at the Catoctin Park visitor center parking lot 8:00 a.m.ish Sunday morning.

Small stream trout fishing, there will be an option of fishing Big Hunting Creek and Owens Creek. Both are catch and release streams. You will need to have a valid Maryland fishing license and trout stamp.

If there is interest after fishing we can head to Dan's Restaurant and Tap room for a brew and a bite to eat.

Slower day, (hot best)  but I still caught 40 fish in 3 hours, see attached 9 lb fish that jumped like a tarpon, pulled like a big redfish and were generally delightful.  3 ponds with various sized fish (they raise them for restaurants).  The most active pond had 2-4 pound fish attacking a big popper - 7 or 8 grabs/cast if you didn't hook up.

I did all fly fishing, but spinning gear works as well.  Their mouths are so abrasive that you need to retie every cast if they get to the leader (a few were lip hooks, but because we were slow stripping, others inhaled it deeper.

It was a great experience, Christina and Mike were super guides.  If you are short on time or want to be sure you catch some fish, check it out.  You can also do as an individual versus having to have a partner along.    They also have bass (largemouth and peacocks) available.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Dec Casting Church

We will have our casting get together on Sunday, 12 Dec at Fletcher's Cove from 8am to 11am.

We will help anyone with any particular casting issues.  Bring your questions. We will have some extra gear, no need to buy anything.  If you are curious about flyfishing/flycasting and are wanting to see what it is about, come on by. Dress for the weather.

We will have a casting station for those who want to begin to pursue the FFI Casting Challenges program (see FFI website). This is a fun and low-key way to improve skills and get recognized by FFI and your peers for your achievements. It is a good way to also set the stage for eventual pursuit of Casting Instructor (CI) certification, if you are interested in that pursuit.

Come on out, whether you are a novice, intermediate, or advanced caster, it is all fun to work on solving casting problems and casting challenges.
If you are just getting started, this is a great way to meet people who can help.  There will be casting instructors on hand.
If you are preparing for an upcoming trip and looking to re-fresh your casting skills, this is a great opportunity.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Christmas Present Help

Just to say that the mother of the cream bead head Krystal caddis larva tells me he's not "chunky," just "big boned." 😀

On that pattern, I wouldn't get too hung up on the type of dubbing.  It looks like a fly that is meant to get down deep fast.  It looks like beside the bead it has lead wire ( or since it's Orvis, probably leadfree wire) underneath the dubbing.  I am guessing that because of the profile (and because that's what makes these nymphs successful).

If you really want to know what's going on, buy one and dissect it with a razor blade.  but I would use

Caddis hook
black thread,
tungsten bead
black thread
pearl crystal flash (ribbing)
pale dubbing (Hare's ear) for the abdomen
black dubbing with some flash in it for the collar

I have no knowledge of what Orvis uses, but there really isn't anything magical about this pattern.  It is just a bead head nymph with a light abdomen, dark collar and Krystal Flash rib.  The stock photo looks a bit chunky which makes me think it has extra weight underneath the dubbing.

I know how to tie a bead head caddis, but I'm wondering if anyone knows what exactly the components of that particular pattern are.

Thanks!

Hi Forks,
Sorry for the short notice.
