I suppose if they land on their belly they can take flight off the surface of the water. i have seen many different patterns including a variety of poppers that would work and a few foam patterns that were cool.

Know any reason why they float on thier backs? Are they top heavy? or is it that they rotate when falling and have a 50/50 chance of landing on back. Maybe they are then unable to turn themselves over? thinking about tying some up right side up and upside down. just for the hell of it and for some variety.--
