Sort of related question, which is more my own curiosity than anything. When do the alewife etc. start running -- when the water warms? Last spring there were countless in Rock Creek around this time but when I went out yesterday I did not see any evidence of them (or any other fish for that matter). I recall it happening during the shad run. I tried to get them to bite last year and they were fixated just on swimming up-stream. I probably won't bother trying again but they are fun to watch.
