As an airline pilot and a fly angler I would like to add to the conversation. everything that has been said in this post is accurate. I would add one caveat. While you may bring on board the approved items and while you may have a printed copy of the regs, always be prepared to e denied. You can argue all day with the rules in hand but if you are in a small airport or up against some random blueberry/smurf (tsa) they can say we don't allow that here. If you run into this, have a durable bag with you to place the items they aren't allow in and check that bag.
Also, get the agent's name and badge number and ask for a supervisor. Let them know you will be writing a letter explaining what happened and why you think you were able to carry those items.
I will spare you my disdain for the GED police force (the only requirement for the job) but warn you that I have had, as the pilot going to work, my fingernail clippers confiscated.
On that note, have a really great trip. Sounds amazing.
