Fished the Occoquan this evening and the Hickory Shad bite was on. I fished in town from the rocks just upstream of the footbridge. Very easy access to the river here but there is limited space and it gets crowded. I was forced to put the fly rod away because of limited space for a back cast when there are a lot of people around, but I brought a back up spinner and had blast. I was catching fish on about every third cast for a good hour. Red and white darts were the flavor they wanted. I don't own a switch or spey, but think one would do well there not having to worry about a back cast. I didn't take a picture of the shad but I did take one of the power lines above, these lines are about 50' above the water. Wonder what they will look like mid summer.
