{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} donating waders

Hi,

I have a pair of Simms size medium waders (Freestone I think, I bought them in 2009).  They're used but in good shape, I've since put on weight and they don't fit me anymore.  Instead of trying to sell them figured I'd donate to Healing Waters or some other similar group.  Had trouble finding info on their website about donating gear...anyone have any ideas for me?

Tim

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Rod Recommendations - best value 8-weight

I've actually heard good things about the Fenwick Aetos rods.  Did Sage discontinue the Bolt and the Approach as well?  The Bolt was a nice rod and at clearance prices it would be reasonable.

Man, excellent feedback from this group.

Appreciate the thoughts on the 7 weight vs 8 weight - I've had that problem in my head for a while. Still torn on that, although leaning more towards the 8 - I'll likely fill in the 6 and 7 down the line, especially if I find myself somewhere closer to bigger trout water.

The feedback on rods was great, everybody's got their favorites. Right now, if it's full price, I'm torn between the TFO BVK and the Sage Motive. However, Sage is discontinuing a bunch of rods, and at a big discount, might be hard to avoid...

Really wishing our Friendly Neighborhood Sage Dealer was open right about now.

OK, I can't say that I have a favorite in that category, but right now I am very intrigued by one that fits your bill.  About two years ago, St Croix introduced the Mojo Bass fly rod in 7, 8, and 9 weights.  They are all 7'11".  They are $150.

What intrigues me?  The rod won "Best of Show" in the fly rod category at ICAST and it's a pretty nice price.

So if I'm intrigued, why haven't I pulled the trigger?  Because I don't really need one (I already have two very nice 7- weights and two very nice 8-weights).  And I want every inch of 9 feet when I'm fishing a rod of that size on the Potomac or the Bay.  And it's a two-piece which limits where I can take it.  And it only comes with a cloth rod sack. (The last reason is easily overcome with a cheap case.)

So I don't need one but I am intrigued and quite possibly might pull the trigger if I find myself with an extra Benjamin or two lying around.  And for a guy like you who is eventually going to (let's face it) get both a 7 and an 8, it's tough to beat the price (at the very least for a backup/loaner rod).

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Rod Recommendations - best value 8-weight

Agree on the Sage Xii, if you can find a used one they are a serious stick for throwing big flies to big fish. I also really like the Sage Bass series rods, I have both the Series 1 and 2, and find both generations are great. I assume you could find a used Series 1 for an ok price.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: 8 weight lines

I'm a big fan of the Rio Outbound Short integrated or Orvis Bank Shot (what I use on my 7'11" 8wt).

If Rio still makes that Smallmouth line, that'd be my recommendation.  Great in the heat, rides high, and man does that line want to shoot.  It makes for a serviceable trout line in shoulder seasons but not in the winter.

If it's in good condition, save the GPX.  Use it for the coldwater.

I've been using a Scientific Anglers GPX 8 weight line but have slowly realized it's not the best line choice for me -- it's an all-purpose line but my (lack of) fly casting skills means I'm not getting much distance with big wind-resistant poppers or weighted flies like Clousers and beadhead woolly buggers (let alone Claw-dads).

There are a fair number of lines out there to throw big/heavy flies. The slight catch is that the other thing I'd like to do with this line is fish a double-nymph/indicator rig on my once-a-year west coast steelhead trip. I know these are different uses but I can't bring myself to getting a special heavy nymph/indicator line for as little as I fish it.

IOW, I'm looking mainly for a smallmouth rod to cast poppers and weighted heavy flies, but I'd like to be able to mend it at least somewhat.

Two of the lines I'm considering are Rio's Big Nasty and Scientific Anglers Mastery Titan Long. Does anyone have any experience with either of these? Or other suggestions?
