The Hickory shad have now arrived at Mason Springs, on Mattawomen Creek. Catching 40 today losing maybe 10 and a couple of blue back herring too.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: TPFR Day on the Gunpowder

Thanks Eliot,   I'm glad you were part of the intrepid 6 today on the Gunpowder.

The water was low and fishing was a slow for everyone today.  I don't know the final tally for today, but at least three browns were brought to hand when they started rising, after about 2 o'clock.

The gunpowder is a a nice river, but it does take time to learn how to fish it.
Thanks for coming out.  I am always up for plqying on the Gunpowder so feel free to reach out.

If you haven't been to the Gunpowder Falls, this will be a fun way to fish this tailwater of the Pretty Boy Reservoir, just north of Baltimore and put some of those casting skills to use.  For more information about Gunpowder Falls see the MD site.  see the attached for detailed instructions.

Spring runs were fun if looking for grabby fish, warmer weather, and less crowd. Although not as strong as chromers in the Fall, the drop backs can still drag you 100 yards down stream. I think mid April to early May might be a good window. May is interesting since you can target both steelhead and small mouth at the same time.

Being in a boat will open up many more spots. As the water warms into April and May, more dropbacks will show up. They're super grabby but don't fight much. Best chance at swinging up a steelhead though. Many folks snag or accidentally "line" fish, but fish will eat flies.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} St Johns in May

Hi,

We are going to St Johns (USVI) with a group in early May. I'd like to slip out for a spot of fishing while at the island.

Any suggestions for fly fishing - gear, guides etc - in and around the island? My fly rodding has been limited to trout, bass and sometimes stripers on the Chesapeake. Would love to try for baby tarpon inshore.

Thanks,
Ajay

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Spring steelhead

I fished Salmon River both Fall and Spring runs of 2024 and 2025. Earlier years I've only fish the Fall runs. 2025 fish are on the larger side when I had more fish broken me off and also landed my pb.    Fall runs have stronger fish for obvious reasons, but also much crowded in public sections, DSR was better with extra cost of course.

[homefamilyarticles] Are you a RAW investor?

Hi,

In my experience, there's a massive gap between those who want to make moves and those who actually do. I've realised the difference comes down to three letters: RAW.

Are you a RAW Investor?

Ready: You've done the research, and the timing is right.

Able: You have the resources and capacity to execute.

Willing: You are committed to taking the next step.

If that's you, we shouldn't just be exchanging emails—we should be talking strategy.

I've opened up specific slots in my calendar for one-to-one sessions to help you bridge the gap between "thinking" and "doing." Whether it's project feedback or a deep-dive collaboration, let's see if we're a match.

Book your session here: booking.olaolu.org

(See the attached image for a quick summary of what we'll cover.)

Talk soon,
Olaolu

On the Erie tribs the fish can leave pretty early depending on the system, especially if there isn't a ton of rain.  The Catt usually has fish through april and into May (when large lake run smallmouth can also enter) but so much of the river is off limits now I don't know if I would go with that as my target stream.  The smaller and shale bottom type streams will have fish for the next few weeks but it isn't unheard of for those fish to be done by April.  I was in Buffalo this weekend and the erie tribs up that way are all up and high which should bring fish.

For both Ontario and Erie I prefer the fall fishing but you can definitely have good days in the spring.  Conditions and fish behavior are just more variable.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} TPFR Day on the Gunpowder

When:     Sunday March 22    9 am -ish  until whenever

Where:    Gunpowder Falls - Bunker Hill access point (the south east side of the river off York Road with a large parking lot)

Hey all - it is getting closer and the weather is  lookin' good for another Gunpowder Fishing Day on the water with TPFR.

The previous Gunpowder Fishing Days have been quite the hit. So we are doing it again and keeping the same free form approach: show up, meet folks, chew the fat, go fish, and relax amidst the beautiful surroundings of the Gunpowder.   We'll have some of the usual suspects from the Sunday Casting Church will be on hand to help.

Hope to see you there.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Spring steelhead

Here is the link to flow conditions at the dam.  It will increase as you go down river from the runoff.  The big melt from the snow melt is happening now so big flows. Stephen Shen and Shane Thomas are couple of other good guides there.  The tackle shops there are also helpful, especially All Season Sports and Dale at Pineville Sports.  Fish tends to be more spread out in the spring and not concentrated upriver like in the winter, especially later in the dropback season.  Good Luck!

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Spring steelhead

I've done the fall run twice and if the spring is anything like the fall, fly fishermen are working incredibly hard for very little payoff — while the hundreds / thousands of guys looking to foul hook or snag a fish as it works upstream are the ones "winning". Maybe targeting steelhead on the fly in the spring is better or different, but salmon fishing was a colossal bust for us.

From what I've learned the spring steelhead are skinny and worn out from spawning and a winter in the river. I went a few years ago with no luck. Ramps grow wild along the stream if you are into foraging.

You can here Mike explain the drop backs on this podcast:
