[homefamilyarticles] Are you a RAW investor?

Hi,

In my experience, there's a massive gap between those who want to make moves and those who actually do. I've realised the difference comes down to three letters: RAW.

Are you a RAW Investor?

Ready: You've done the research, and the timing is right.

Able: You have the resources and capacity to execute.

Willing: You are committed to taking the next step.

If that's you, we shouldn't just be exchanging emails—we should be talking strategy.

I've opened up specific slots in my calendar for one-to-one sessions to help you bridge the gap between "thinking" and "doing." Whether it's project feedback or a deep-dive collaboration, let's see if we're a match.

Book your session here: booking.olaolu.org

(See the attached image for a quick summary of what we'll cover.)

Talk soon,
Olaolu

On the Erie tribs the fish can leave pretty early depending on the system, especially if there isn't a ton of rain.  The Catt usually has fish through april and into May (when large lake run smallmouth can also enter) but so much of the river is off limits now I don't know if I would go with that as my target stream.  The smaller and shale bottom type streams will have fish for the next few weeks but it isn't unheard of for those fish to be done by April.  I was in Buffalo this weekend and the erie tribs up that way are all up and high which should bring fish.

For both Ontario and Erie I prefer the fall fishing but you can definitely have good days in the spring.  Conditions and fish behavior are just more variable.

I will also add that Salmon River fish seem to be running on the large size this year. Here are a few fish from the past couple of weekends.

Being in a boat will open up many more spots. As the water warms into April and May, more dropbacks will show up. They're super grabby but don't fight much. Best chance at swinging up a steelhead though. Many folks snag or accidentally "line" fish, but fish will eat flies.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} TPFR Day on the Gunpowder

When:     Sunday March 22    9 am -ish  until whenever

Where:    Gunpowder Falls - Bunker Hill access point (the south east side of the river off York Road with a large parking lot)

Hey all - it is getting closer and the weather is  lookin' good for another Gunpowder Fishing Day on the water with TPFR.

The previous Gunpowder Fishing Days have been quite the hit. So we are doing it again and keeping the same free form approach: show up, meet folks, chew the fat, go fish, and relax amidst the beautiful surroundings of the Gunpowder.   We'll have some of the usual suspects from the Sunday Casting Church will be on hand to help.

If you haven't been to the Gunpowder Falls, this will be a fun way to fish this tailwater of the Pretty Boy Reservoir, just north of Baltimore and put some of those casting skills to use.  For more information about Gunpowder Falls see the MD site.  see the attached for detailed instructions.

Hope to see you there.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Spring steelhead

Here is the link to flow conditions at the dam.  It will increase as you go down river from the runoff.  The big melt from the snow melt is happening now so big flows. Stephen Shen and Shane Thomas are couple of other good guides there.  The tackle shops there are also helpful, especially All Season Sports and Dale at Pineville Sports.  Fish tends to be more spread out in the spring and not concentrated upriver like in the winter, especially later in the dropback season.  Good Luck!

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Spring steelhead

I've done the fall run twice and if the spring is anything like the fall, fly fishermen are working incredibly hard for very little payoff — while the hundreds / thousands of guys looking to foul hook or snag a fish as it works upstream are the ones "winning". Maybe targeting steelhead on the fly in the spring is better or different, but salmon fishing was a colossal bust for us.

From what I've learned the spring steelhead are skinny and worn out from spawning and a winter in the river. I went a few years ago with no luck. Ramps grow wild along the stream if you are into foraging.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Occaquan 2026

Peter, I am a frequent angler on the Potomac and have probably made about 25 outings to the Occoquan.   The shad show up a few days to a week before they hit us up in DC, but there is not a huge difference.   You can get numbers on Occoquan, but in general they are smaller fish, all Hickory Shad, no Americans that I have ever seen.  My experience is that there are Stripers around, (also smaller than Potomac stripers) but there is not a "run" like there is in the mainstem of the Potomac.   The Occoquan is a fine place to go for an outing, but it is not as "majestic" (for lack of a better word) than the Potomac.  it is smaller, more developed, and does not feel as much like you are in a natural environment that has been relatively unchanged for thousands of years (the way I feel on the Potomac).

All that said, I'd be up for an outing!

On Sat, Mar 7, 2026 at 10:30 AM peter odell <peterlodell@gmail.com> wrote:

Due to the crazy repricing of the rowboats at fletchers and traffic, I've been fishing the occaquan from my kayak last couple of years.  its been very good generally.

I'm curious about this year with the Potomac issues, Occaquan a clean watershed but the fish still have to get there.

Anyone out there an expert on the river?
Do the stripers show up sooner, during or after the shad? (I've hit several schools late in the season, but may be missing something).
Do the fish get down there earlier since its several miles closer to the eventual ocean?

Any thoughts appreciated.  I try to go mid week at sunrise if anyone looking for someone to paddle with.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Occaquan 2026

We flyfish with Rich Mitchell in Islamorada, though he fishes all styles as conditions allow or as the client prefers.
He keeps his boat at the 3 Waters Resort & his number is ‭(305) 393-0729‬. Tell him Lynn Scholz referred you.
Have fun!

Rob, great episode. I'm really feeling for the professionals who rely on the Potomac and surrounding areas for their livelihoods.

I'm wondering, do we have any idea how far the effects of this will spread? You spoke about birds potentially picking up these contaminants and spreading them to other bodies of water. Are there plans to test different areas of the watershed to see where these bacteria are contained to? Do we think it's safe to fish holmes run, accotink creek, north of Great Falls, etc?

Last thought: Should fly shops (District Angling and Orvis) be mentioning this to customers in passing if they are buying shad flies or mention the Potomac? I really appreciated Richie mentioning this at one of the last fly seminars. Not sure it would have been on my radar due to the terrible coverage.

I feel like the upcoming Shad Night will be us discussing the situation and the fact that the shad run won't be fishable.

You will learn about the broccoli hatch, the DC government lack of responsibility, and a new section to float when this is all cleared up.
